We are saddened to announce that Hugo C. Lane, Professor Emeritus of Biology, passed away on January 30, 2025.

Dr. Lane joined Wake Forest’s biology faculty in 1973. He retired in 2013. At Wake Forest, he taught vertebrate physiology, endocrinology, and biomedical ethics; moreover, he served as the Health Professions Advisor for 30 years. He was Wake Forest’s faculty advisor for Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society for 20 years. He brought rugby to Wake Forest, coaching and playing with the team for ten years.

At his retirement celebration, many awards Hugo had received were listed off, but the most meaningful tribute to him was when the Biology department chair shared that, “Hugo loved his students…and his students loved him.” He was known as a favorite professor among Wake Forest students, and he was honored to receive the Tri Delta Apple Pie Professor Award numerous times.

We grieve Dr. Lane’s death and extend our condolences to his family and friends, as well as those at Wake Forest who had the opportunity to know him.

A service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025. The obituary for Dr. Lane may be found here.

Each of us is affected by loss in different ways. The Wake Forest community is encouraged to seek support by calling 336-758-CARE (2273) or visiting the We Are Wake website to learn more about resources offered by the University.
