Sullivan Scholarship for Expanding Biological Horizons
As a result of a generous bequest from the late Professor of Biology, Dr. Robert L. Sullivan, the Department of Biology is able to offer the Sullivan Scholarship program. Dr. Sullivan was a strong proponent of students being able to take advantage of off-campus opportunities for study and research in biology. Undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing biological studies beyond the classroom at Wake Forest may apply for funds to support these and similar activities:
- Summer experiences at a research laboratory or field station.
- Independent biological studies projects away from Winston-Salem in laboratories or the field.
- Participating in organized field trips during the summer and during other academic breaks under the direction of a WFU Biology faculty member.
In recent years, students have taken summer courses in Jamaica, Peru, Australia, Kenya, and the Turks & Caicos Islands. They have pursued research experiences in the Arizona-Sonora Desert, the Galapagos Islands, Bolivia, Spain, Australia, and at the University of Cape Town. Others have had internships in International Health with the World Bank in London, worked with the Nature Conservancy, and participated in workshops on Chagas Disease in Ecuador.
The application acceptance for the 2024-2025 academic year is rolling, but the deadline for consideration is September 13, 2024 (fall semester) and March 17, 2025 (Spring semester). Proposals will be reviewed by the Department of Biology Sullivan Scholarship Committee. Grants are awarded according to scientific merit and financial need and funds awarded per proposal are usually less than $2,500. Watch for fliers around Winston Hall with more information and announcing the application deadline.
Priority for funding from the Sullivan Scholarship fund is an activity with either field experience as the primary component or travel to a laboratory to learn a new technique not available at Wake Forest University.

Wake Forest Research Fellows Program
URECA – Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center
The Wake Forest Research Fellows Program (WFRFP), administered through URECA, is designed to encourage collaborative research between Wake Forest University faculty and students. While improving opportunities for mentoring and helping students progress into advanced work, these are also a means of supporting successful and dedicated students with financial scholarships. Scientific research done through the WFRFP will satisfy the requirement for a research experience for those students earning the BS degree in biology.
The award provides a $4,000.00 stipend. If on-campus housing is desired, the award will also provide one-half the cost of a double room for both summer sessions. An expense budget (for travel and supplies related to the research) of up to $500 may accompany the fellowship.

Richter Scholarships
The Richter Scholarship is a competitive, independent study scholarship awarded to students proposing an independent study project requiring travel away from Winston-Salem. International projects are especially encouraged. Most projects are expected to occur in the summer, and are expected to be enriching and potentially life-changing. The Richter Scholar awards are for up to $6,000. Each student is required to have a faculty mentor for his or her project.
