Study Abroad in Biology

Many Biology majors study abroad. We encourage our majors to take advantage of study abroad opportunities, but also to make plans as early as possible to ensure they can complete degree requirements in a timely fashion.

Wake Forest students planning to study abroad should explore study away options at studyabroad.wfu.edu. Courses taught in Wake Forest programs are considered regular Wake Forest courses and count automatically toward degree requirements, including BIO major and minor requirements. Courses taught in non-Wake Forest programs come in as transfer courses and, if approved for transfer credit, may be applied to the BIO major or minor. The Wake Forest Center for Global Programs and Studies maintains a list of approved courses. If you wish to take a non-Wake Forest course not already on the list, send the syllabus and a complete description of the program to biology@wfu.edu to start the approval process.

Many Biology majors choose to study abroad during the fall semester of their junior year, although any semester following the completion of the first year can Once a major has completed the biology core (BIO 150, 150L, 160, and 160L), she/he should be able to handle higher-level courses taught in an overseas program.

The Department of Biology often offers summer courses in Peru and Australia. Financial assistance (up to $2000) is available from the (https://biology.wfu.edu/undergraduate/support-for-undergraduate-research/). Financial support may also be available from Wake Forest Global Programs & Studies (studyabroad.wfu.edu/funding).
